The History of Northfield

Northfield lies in the south of Birmingham, bordering Worcestershire. It is a predominantly suburban area. It has a distinguished history, and it’s industrial past has resulted in a diverse range of properties available in the area. Northern parts of Northfield lie within the boundaries Bournville Model Village, founded by Cadbury, and the southern extremes, in Longbridge, feature many by homes built by Austin Motors for its workers.  The area is also home to Northfield Manor, once owned by George Cadbury and now Birmingham University.

It is most famous for its Longbridge car plant, now mostly closed. However, the area has seen massive redevelopment, with the site formerly occupied by the factory now home to offices, supermarkets, a retail park, the new Bournville College campus, a youth centre, a retirement village, and plenty of new build, affordable housing. In fact, the site of the former car plant now employs more people than the plant originally did. Longbridge has become a model for redevelopment across the country.

Northfield is split down the middle by the A38, which leads to Cornwall, if you’re feeling adventurous. It has plenty to occupy locally though with the stunning Waseley Hills Country Park, a 150 acre site of rolling hills, paths and woodland. You will be spoiled for choice too with primary and secondary schools.

As well as walking and closeness to Birmingham, Northfield is close to Cadbury World, a popular tourist attraction. Apart from it being a small suburb, it is also close to the M5 and M42. Longbridge and Northfield train stations are both well suited for transport either in towards Birmingham, or out to Redditch.
