Wollaston is a suburb of Stourbridge on the border between Stourbridge and Staffordshire. Despite its small size, Wollaston is a village with global reach. Wollaston is famous amongst locals for the spectacular Wollaston Hall, which once stood in the centre of Wollaston Village, however now the hall has been disassembled and shipped to Michigan, USA, where it now forms part of Edsel and Elenor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores. Continuing the American connection, Wollaston was also where the famous steam engine, the Stourbridge Lion, was built. The Stourbridge Lion was the first steam locomotive to run commercially in the USA, and whilst its impact is well known amongst those in the US, it remains a relatively unknown fact on this side of the pond. The steam engine itself is now on display in Baltimore, Maryland. Over here, the historic foundry on Lowndes Road is now a state of the art, multi-million-pound doctors’ surgery, the Lion Health Centre. There is a movement lead by local historian, Dr Paul Collins, to develop a heritage centre to celebrate this unique piece of history.
